Accreditation
With the help of funding from Health Canada the Seabird Island Band’s Health Department is currently in the first year of the three year process of becoming accredited through Accreditation Canada. Accreditation compares the quality of our services to national standards of excellence.
Accreditation also means always improving upon our services. To stay up to date on Accreditation, use the Accreditation tag on our blog or click here.

Technology
In the early 2000's it became apparent to the leadership of Seabird Island that our community members had little or no internet access which restricted our students ability to do research, restricted our elders' ability to communicate, and restricted our ability to get in touch with our members. So in 2009, Seabird Island became the first community in Canada to use Siemens technology to operate a community-wide Wi-Fi hot spot offering low-cost high-speed internet.
Comprehensive Community Plan
Seabird Island is a community with a history of innovative thinking and a strong vision for the future. Our band has worked hard to get to where we are today and we are excited as we move forward and moving forward means planning for the future. So in 2009, the Seabird Island Band developed a Comprehensive Community Plan which provides a framework to protect the values of our community and a roadmap to steer through the challenges that arise from our growth and development by taking into account:
- Environmentally sensitive areas
- Agricultural land protection and food security
- Community economic development
- Affordable housing
- Transportation
- Waste management
- Heritage and Culture
Sustainable Housing
In 2004, Seabird Island began an innovative, cutting edge, sustainable community housing that uses renewable technologies, and includes first-in-the-world features.
This project provides residents with improved quality, energy efficient housing by integrating renewable energy sources, and it is affordable. Plus, it has other remarkable features, such as reduced maintenance and lower heating and electricity cost, because of the advanced technology.
This unique development is part of the Seabird Island First Nation's Sustainable Community Plan. The idea behind sustainable community planning is to use land and design neighbourhoods in a way that reduces costs and minimizes environmental impacts, while creating a livable community - both now and well into the future.
Emergency Plan
The Seabird Island Band’s Emergency Plan was first developed in 2009 in partnership with all Departments within Seabird Island. It includes:
- Emergency Contact List
- Community Context
- Emergency Plan Overview
- Emergency Management Organization
- Emergency Response & Recovery Structure
- Hazard Matrix & Action Plan
- Emergency Social Services (ESS)
- Recovery Roles & Procedures
