Comprehensive Community Plan

In 2009, the Seabird Island Band started work on a Comprehensive Community Plan or CCP. A CCP will provide Seabird with a framework to protect the values of our community, as well as a roadmap to steer through the challenges that arise with our constant growth and development.

Our finished Comprehensive Community Plan will integrate our ancestor's teachings to enhance the social, economic and cultural connections of our community members. Including the following key areas:

  • Waste Management
  • Energy Management
  • Agricultural Land Management

The Seabird Island Band has currently just finished the second phase of completing our Comprehensive Community Plan and would like your feedback, click the following links to blog articles:

Eco-Centre Implementation

Our vision for the future is informed by a long cultural tradition of living in balance with the land. It is inspired by our love for our children, grandchildren and the generations to come. And it is guided by our people, here today, working to create families and a community that reflects the deeply held values of our society.

“What you look after in life looks after you… we are caretakers of this land. If we meet these responsibilities we too will be taken care of” Chief Clem Seymour

The Seabird Island Band is comprised of 2,200 hectares of land, most of it deposited by the river with more than 700 hectares of prime agricultural land for growing local, sustainable food and energy crops. As well as more than 10 kilometres of pristine Fraser River access for fishing, resource extraction and recreation.

Guiding Principles for Development

  • Seabird Island will remain in control of its economy now and in the future
  • Growth will be sustainable and provide value for future generations
  • Activities honour holistic, economic, social and environmental values
  • Will incorporate its culture into new business ventures
  • Will encourage long-term and sustainable businesses
  • Will encourage new jobs and employments, especially for youth
  • Will encourage individual entrepreneurs

Guiding Principles for Energy Management

  • Improve energy efficiency of existing and new commercial buildings and homes
  • Increase awareness of energy conservation
  • Develop and increase supply of local, renewable energy
  • Invest in and attract clean, green and innovative technologies to support economic development and local employment
  • Develop public and private partnerships to support green energy goals

Guiding Principles for Agricultural Land Management

  • Preserve farmland to provide local agricultural opportunities for present and future generations
  • Maintain and improve soil health by increasing the soil’s organic matter which also reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers
  • Encourage agricultural crops and management that are less dependent on pesticides and herbicides
  • Utilize lands preferentially for local, healthy, sustainable food production
  • Explore potential for energy crops

Goals of Waste Management

  1. Commit to a zero waste future
  2. Produce less garbage
  3. Reuse, recycle and compost more
  4. Increase knowledge, awareness and participation
  5. Develop waste recovery businesses (commercial composting, drywall recycling, shingle recycling, organic fertilizer production)
