For many years, the Seabird Island Band has focused on restoring and revitalizing our Halq’emeylem language, and that work led to the realization that children within our own community have little to no opportunity to hear our Halq’emeylem language being spoken, they don’t have the opportunity to learn the language in their early years and throughout life, and if nothing is done to bring language to our children their generation would never have the chance to speak Halq’emeylem.
The Seabird Island Immersion Preschool was born out of that realization. The Preschool itself has been in operation for over 30 years with a successful history of helping children in the first steps of their life-long journey of learning, and creating children that love and are enthusiastic about learning.
Since the Preschool began, we have always provided children with Halq’emeylem instruction, but beginning in the 2010 term we made it our philosophy that we wouldn’t just teach Halq’emeylem, we would teach IN Halq’emeylem.
At preschool age children are more receptive to learning a second language. If you consider how children learn their first language at home, parents don’t normally sit children down to teach them English. Children absorb their first language because it’s all around them. And that’s exactly how children learn at the Seabird Island Immersion Preschool. Children are provided with a caring environment that is full of Halq’emeylem.
From our books to the language we teach in to our unique curriculum and learning activities, all children are given the opportunity to explore and discover the Halq’emeylem language. Our instructors not only teach the academic skills that will prepare your child for Kindergarten and Elementary school, but we also teach them spiritual and cultural values to help them live successfully in a multi-cultural society.
Our Immersion Preschool has unique features including large play areas both indoor and outdoor as well as an age appropriate playground. All of which have been specifically designed to complement and enhance the unique and creative educational experience we offer. The toys and activities at have also been carefully selected to promote children’s learning and development at their individual level.
Seabird Island Immersion Preschool is open to children who are between the ages of 3 and 4 by December 31st of that school year. To learn more about our Immersion Preschool or to register your child for next year, contact our staff today.
