Wildfire Smoke Air Quality Information
People at risk
Elders/ seniors.
Pregnant people.
People who smoke.
Infants and young children.
People who work outdoors.
People who are involved in strenuous outdoor activities.
People with existing illnesses
or chronic health conditions
such as cancer, diabetes,
mental illness lung and heart disease and asthma.
Symptoms of wildfire smoke
Mild symptoms
Tears.
Runny nose.
Sore eyes and throat.
Moderate symptoms
Skin rash.
Headaches.
Nausea and vomiting.
Coughing or wheezing.
Rapid breathing and heartbeat.
Severe symptoms
Chest pain/ difficulty breathing.
Dizziness or fainting.
If you are experiencing severe symptoms, call 911.
How to reduce risk
Wildfire emergency
Local health or emergency authorities will give instructions if a wildfire threatens the community.
Always have an evacuation plan in place. Please evacuate immediately when advised.
Keep windows and doors closed
During an air quality advisory keep windows and
doors closed.
Use a portable air purifier when possible.
Find clean air
To get a break from the smoke go to a building that offers clean air such as a mall or movie theatre..
Limit outdoor and strenuous activity
Reduce the amount of time you spend outside to reduce your exposure to wildfire smoke. Postpone your outdoor activities till the environment improves.
If you must spend time outdoors wear a well fitted respirator type mask (N95 or equivalent) that can help reduce exposure to fine particles in smoke.
If you take pharmaceutical puffers on a regular basis, make sure your prescription is always filled and keep these on hand
Care for others
Check in on others who are in your care or who live nearby and may be vulnerable to wildfire smoke.
Frequently check in on neighbors, friends, and older family members, especially those with chronic illnesses.
Keep indoor air clean
When indoors minimize sources of air pollution such as smoking, cooking, renovations/ home improvements, hobbies, house cleaning and laundry.
Use bathroom/ kitchen fans
Use HVAC system in your home and replace filters as per manufactures instructions.
